Nestle Ghana Trains Journalists On Product Fortification And Labeling

In its quest to build capacity of journalists on nutrition reporting, Nestlé Ghana Limited in collaboration with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Wednesday August, 26, 2020 has trained over 30 journalists on nutrition, product fortification and food labeling.

The journalists who participated in a day’s media training were drawn from different media houses and were exposed to information on nutrition health and wellness.

Justifying the importance of the training, the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager of Nestle Ghana Ltd, Madam Deborah Kwablah said, in 2019, Nestle Ghana in partnership with the GJA organise the training as part of their commitment to build capacity and knowledge of journalist to improve nutrition education and reportage in Ghana.

This training, which is the second in the series, was focused on the importance of fortifying foods with essential micronutrient including iron and how to read food labels to be better informed about what we buy and consume.

The Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager of Nestle Ghana Ltd disclosed that her outfit has a purpose of unlocking the power of food to enhance quality of life for everyone today and for generations to come.

Nestle is enabling healthier and happier lives through it affordable and accessible food and beverage options, sharing nutrition knowledge and supporting initiatives such as the Live Strong with Iron campaign that is reaching millions of individuals and families.

She appealed to the participants to set the nutrition agenda, discussed it and sustained the discussion for the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG3- good health and wellbeing.

On his part, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Roland Affail Monney said, “Building the capacity of the media is key to Ghana’s development.

He was of the opinion that the nation’s health bill which has been ballooned on yearly based can be reduced if the media harness the impact of this kind of training through professional and innovative reporting on nutrition health and wellness issues.

Mr. Monney used the occasion to urged journalists to tell more nutrition focused stories to inspire Ghanaians to lead healthier lifestyle. Saying high rate of under nutrition in Ghana can be dealt with by good and focused journalism.

He said this to emphasize that journalists have a major role to play to influence healthier eating habits among Ghanaians and they can play this role by learning and educating the populace on nutrition.

Prof Matilda Steiner Asiedu, a renowned nutritionist and a lecturer at the University of Ghana took the participants through importance of eating fortified foods and beverages whiles Mrs Margaret-Mary Tohouenou, the Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Manager at Nestle took participants through the importance of Product Labeling.
