Green Republic Launches ‘Plant Your Age’ Campaign

The Green Republic Project, a non-governmental organisation, has launched the ‘Plant Your Age’ campaign as part of its vision to lead the teeming youth of Ghana to overcome the climate crisis by planting 20 million trees by 2028 as their contribution to global efforts.

Ghana is on the verge of witnessing the recurrence of more devastations associated with climate change including flooding and irregular rainfall pattern if frantic efforts are not put in place to tackle the climate crisis.

This has compelled stakeholders in the green industry to champion the cause of regular tree planting as a natural remedy to reconcile humanity with nature.

The ‘Plant Your Age’ campaign was launched at the second annual climate benefit ball 2022 under the theme, ‘emerging from covid-19 pandemic to accelerated climate action.

Typically, funding comes from both private and public sources in the form of loans, bilateral funding, export credits as well as multinational bodies like the Green Climate Fund and the World Bank.

Realistically, these funding sources are mainly targeted at nations, not youth-driven organizations including nonprofit organizations.

Convenor of the Green Republic Project, Nana Yaw Osei Darkwa commended the President of Ghana Nana Akufo Addo for his decision to institute the Green Ghana Day to rally the citizenry to plant more trees.

He added, “overcoming the climate change crisis will require bold, decisive, comprehensive solutions and public-private collaborations.”

“As the global community strives to curb the climate crisis, little actions by citizens especially the youth would go a long way to complement efforts by governments, global and regional bodies like the United Nations, African and European Unions,” he emphasized.

Speaking at the event, Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, Sugandh Rajaram commended managers of the Green Republic Project for an innovative drive to lead the youth to fight climate change.

Managing director of the National Lotteries Authority, Sammy Awuku, advised the citizenry to grow trees in their backyards and if possible, fund people who will do that if it is impossible to do that on one’s free will.

“You should have a tree to your name, in your darkest hour, it will save you,” he stressed.

Funds in excess of 63,000 cedis were raised through the fundraising to aid in more tree planting with Managing Director of Ghana Post, Bice Osei Kuffour, donating GHS10,000 to the course.
