Two Professors Honoured at 2019 Ghana Cocoa Awards
Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, President of the Ghana Technology University College and Professor Frederick Addai, former Head of Anatomy of the University of Ghana Medical School, have been honored for their contribution to the cocoa industry at the 2019 Ghana Cocoa Awards held in Accra.
In a brief citation, the two Professors were celebrated for their outstanding contributions towards the sustenance and promotion of cocoa as a health food.

‘Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa is a Food Scientist and Technologist with over 20 years’ experience in Food Science. Your research interest Spans from Food Quality, Management Systems, Cocoa Production and Processing Technology, Chocolate Technology, Canning Technology, Oil Palm, Cereals etc.
Until your appointment as the President of Ghana Technology University College, Accra, you were with the Department of Nutrition and Food Science of the University of Ghana Legon.
You have used your position as the Chief of Fiapre Traditional Area as well as your membership with the National Planning Committee for the Promotion of Cocoa Consumption in Ghana to promote cocoa a health food that should be taken regularly.
You have supported several cocoa processing companies to come up with excellent and appropriate recipes for the production of cocoa beverages in an effort to boost consumption of cocoa.
Sir, at this maiden edition of the Ghana Cocoa Awards, you are being honoured with the Production & Processing Technology Honorary Award 2019.
Professor Frederick K. Addai is the former Head of Anatomy of the University of Ghana Medical School, Korle-Bu Campus.
Sir, you have devoted your time and researched into cocoa and its usefulness to the health of human beings.
Recently, you published a groundbreaking work that proved that regular intake of cocoa reduces one’s chances of frequent malaria attacks and this discovery has significantly improved people’s taste for unsweetened cocoa.
For the past 20 years, you have been campaigning for the consumption of cocoa in view of the rich minerals in the crop. You have also used your membership with the National Planning Committee on Cocoa Consumption to encourage Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of consuming more cocoa.

Receiving the award, Professor Afoakwa called on investors to take advantage of the business-friendly atmosphere in the country to set up more factories and process more cocoa to tertiary level to boost consumption.
On his part, Prof. Addai was full of praise for the award given him. ‘I am happy my over 20 years’ experience in research into the health and nutritional benefits of cocoa has been recognized tonight,’ he expressed.
The occasion was used to honour other distinguished personalities like former President John Agyekum Kufour, Mr. Anthony Fofie – former Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) and Dr. Edward Amporful, Chief Pharmacist at the Cocoa Clinic for their diverse roles in the cocoa sector.
There were other award categories for various stakeholders in the cocoa value chain.
Ghana Cocoa Awards was organized by VC Media with support from stakeholders in the Cocoa Sector.
